Family Tales

I'd like to introduce you to my mom.  My little 4'.9" Sicilian, spunky mama.  She will be celebrating her 90th birthday in just a few days.  She could boast many accomplishments over her long life, such as being married to my handsome dad for 70 years, or dedicating her life to her family & raising … Continue reading Family Tales

Expectations

Many things have changed in my life over the past several years (and since I've begun this blog).  Children have grown into adults, friends have taken different paths, and new adventures have knocked at our door.   Our Highland Haven, however, has continued to stay a place where loved ones gather, where happy memories are … Continue reading Expectations

Change

I brought home a little piece of spring from the grocery store the other day.  A sort of promise of things to come. Nothing ever stays the same.  People grow, move away, die.  Seasons change, children turn into men & women, chapters close, doors open. Life is rather uncertain, isn't it?  Yet, we can count … Continue reading Change

Scents of Hospitality

The welcoming ambience of something simmering on the stove has an old-fashioned charm which echoes, Please come in and make yourself at home."

A Lifetime of Traditions

This is a post from a few years back. My dad just turned 90 and my mom is 89! They live in town now, with my 3 sisters nearby. I miss their visits dearly, but we write every evening and I send my mom her Sicilian Christmas cookies in the mail! Hope you enjoy the recipe too.

Christmastime is also a time for carrying on family traditions.  Some started for my own children and others have been handed down through several lifetimes.  I still get excited every year to unwrap certain old ornaments to hang on our tree, or the old Santa and elves that my mother used to decorate our mantle with each Christmas when I was a little girl.  My heart still fills with joy when I hear certain songs sung about the Savior’s birth and am reminded about the true spirit and reason for our celebration.  Each year I enjoy reminiscing with my three sisters about certain childhood memories of Christmas past.

The Little Cabin in the Woods

“This was the second time my wife and I stayed in this wonderful cabin. Last year, on our honeymoon, was the first. This year, on our one-year anniversary, was the second. What a place to relax, with the quiet depth of the forest all around us. Rosanne's home cooking is very gourmet and very scrumptious, … Continue reading The Little Cabin in the Woods

The Old Paths

Jeremiah 6:16  “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls."... As a child, my mom would say I was an "Old Soul".  Now, as an adult, I am labled  "old-fashioned".  … Continue reading The Old Paths
